Our “Day in the Life” series takes an insider look at a variety of Skylab’s roles – today we’re focussing on life as a Marketing & Events Manager where we talk to Emilia.
The Marketing and Events Manager is responsible for delivering and further developing the Marketing Strategy and for developing and delivering the events programme.
Emilia Kolbjørnsen, Marketing & Events Manager for Skylab
When did you join Skylab and which products have you helped develop?
I joined Skylab February 2018 and have been involved in developing the events portfolio and marketing mix. My favourite project has been developing our Focus brand, which is a series of international thought leadership events.
What gets you into the right frame of mind for the day?
Coffee and some Kanye West tunes!
Are there any sites that you check each day?
I usually go through my google alerts and news updates to see if there are anything we need to keep an eye on/or a story to tell.
What does a typical day look like?
I usually catch up with my CEO to see if there are any tasks I need to follow up with. If we have any events planned, then I am most likely deep down in planning and preparing.
What’s the best project you’ve ever worked on at Skylab and why?
I loved developing our exclusive invite-only thought-leadership events called “Focus”. Being able to deliver it from the drawing boards to life and to see how attendees enjoyed the event as much as I enjoyed designing it.
How do you stay focused throughout the day?
More caffeine, regular breaks and a good Spotify playlist.
How do you unwind at the end of the day?
I tend to go to CrossFit straight after work, which weirdly helps me in having more energy to get through my days. I then get home, cook some food and relax with some TV or games (jigsaws/game consoles) or catch up with friends.
Do you think it’s important to work on your skills in your spare time? If so, which skills do you work on?
Yes! The marketing field is always changing and courses are necessary to stay up to date.
I am always keeping up with Google and their Digital Garage platform. I also attend local meetups and events to meet with other marketing professionals.
What’s been a turning point in your career so far?
Working for the worlds largest exhibition company in the United Arab Emirates was my turning point and where my love for events really manifested. Prior to this, I had been working in the F&B marketing sector and hadn’t experienced the buzz from being on the exhibition floor.
What’s the biggest misconception about being a Senior Developer?
That we all are like Donald Draper and Peggy Olson from Mad Men. There are so many different roles in the marketing field, you have creative directors, copywriters, digital marketers, social media experts, strategic roles, you name it 🙂
