A Few New Video Trends From 2013

Skylab is hiring!

We stumbled across a great article on the Business2Community website that discussed changes in video viewing habits across the internet. The last few years have shown a steady increase in engagement through video and businesses have been ont he forefront of that trend. Here are a few of the trends from the article:

  • eMarketer predicts that more than 73 million people will watch mobile video in 2013, a 20 percent increase from 2012.
  • In many cases, people are more likely to watch a video than read a long block of text. Did you know the average time spent on pages with videos was 3 minutes compared to 1 minute and 30 seconds averaged on pages without videos. Also, almost 60% of C-level and senior executives said they would watch a video before reading text on the same web page.
  • People are tired of getting the same old emails. Putting video in email marketing has been shown to increase click-through rates by over 96%
  • Buyers are doing more and more of their own research online before making a purchase. This includes watching videos about products they intend to buy. Viewers of a product video are 64-85% more likely to buy after watching.

There is no doubt about the growth of video engagement. In our own experience we see very strong increases in user participation and on-page time after adding video into the marketing mix. A proper and well planned video or content strategy can make or break a website.

With portable devices getting cheaper and increases in broadband and wifi speeds consumption of video will continue to grow. At the moment all major brands and websites are publishing video content mixed into existing content and that isn’t going to change.
