Manchester City Football Club Brings Google Plus & Big Data to Football

Skylab is hiring!

Manchester City Football Club is stepping ahead of other football clubs by engaging their fans through Google’s social media platform, Google+ Hangouts. Google+ Hangouts offer live video streams, are accessible via mobile phone or even share and use a whiteboard.

  • MCFC will be the first club to do something like this
  • Google+ Hangouts will allow fans to interact with the club
  • City will soon launch ‘The 3rd Hall’- a live Q&A with the club pre-match
  • The first show will include Patrick Vieira
  • Up to ten people can communicate with the team via the Hangout
  • The first show took place on September 23rd 2012

Unlike many other sports football is just starting to join the digital communications race. With such a vast audience around the world even the smallest change can ripple to have a huge impact. Google+ Hangouts are a good start but it’s barely scratching the surface of what is possible.

In order to retain fans and create new ones football will be forced to open the flood gates. Just as with any business social media can help you get closer to your audience, get invaluable feedback, create more meaningful ways of engagement and it ultimately has the potential to increase conversions or sales. We may need to wait patiently for football to join us but you can be assured, eventually, they will.

MCFC recently released a vast amount of digital player data to digital developers to help build and craft applications and services. This data will help to keep MCFC ahead of their competitors by generating more opportunities for fans to interact with the club digitally.
