On-line Video Sites Thriving In Europe

Skylab is hiring!

Nielsen’s Q3 2011 survey indicates that people spend more time watching videos online than they do on watching TV. A fairly recent article on VentureBeat highlights the growth of video websites in the UK and Europe compared to their US counterparts.

  • In Europe Comscore found people watched an average of 20 hours of video every quarter
  • The author suspects that part of the reason video consumption is ahead of the US in Europe is because European broadcasters don’t need to license local TV content from third-parties
  • European broadcasters, such as the BBC, are launching their own web video players and content networks in the style of Netflix and Amazon
  • On-demand television is very popular and often complements online video content
  • Smartphones and mobile video has surged in the UK passing the US

The author makes a lot of insights into the structure of video content, suppliers and platforms that all make sense. From our point of view we see on-line video consumption and content creation rising drastically and this is part of the driving strength that grows our MediaTank platform.

Video is the easiest content for a person to consume and it’s also the most engaging. As cameras and smartphones get cheaper, the quality of the footage increases and the speed of the internet grows it becomes less costly to produce videos. The real question isn’t how will you produce video but more importantly what video do you need to be produce in order to reach your audience and achieve your goals.

Skylab and MediaTank create the ideal combination of video content creation and dissemination. If you are still trying to determine your video strategy email us directly at [email protected] or on Twitter @studioskylab.
