Sport England’s strategy, ‘Towards An Active Nation’ advocates a customer-focused approach delivering sport to the physically inactive. Swim England’s Just Swim initiative targets lapsed swimmers in order to get them swimming again and being healthier and happier.
Skylab was tasked with delivering the digital proposition for Just Swim, namely Swim England’s first cross-platform mobile app.
Swim England conducted segmentation analysis to help us generate the app’s proposition – swim towards a healthy lifestyle. From this we developed a goal setting app that would allow users to set targets, burn off calories and get a little fitter, at their own pace.
Through integrating the app with Swim England’s pool database API, users are able to find local pools and log their swims with ease. For added simplicity, since the pool database sets the pool’s length in the app automatically, users don’t need to know the length of their pool when they log a swim.
Once users begin logging swims in their personal diary, they can view their progress in the dashboard. Users can compare calories burned, swim times and distance swum with previous weeks, months and years.
Users can set themselves challenges such as burning off the equivalent of a Saturday night takeaway or even swimming the distance of a half-marathon through the goal setting feature. Once completed, each success can be shared on social media.
To increase user engagement, the app incorporates a blog providing users with helpful articles, videos, exercise ideas and nutrition tips. All the tips are designed to improve the user’s general fitness and wellbeing.
Intercom is a customer engagement platform. By integrating the platform into the app, and through a process of incrementally iterated releases, we were able to gather feedback from a group of beta testers during the early stages of the app’s development.
We are continuing to use Intercom in order to gather insight into the app’s usage, helping us to identify new features and enhancements.
